Onero™
What is Onero™?
Onero™ is a world renowned, evidence-based, exercise programme specifically developed to enhance bone density, and decrease the risk of falls and fractures in low bone density populations. It is based on the LIFTMOR trials conducted at Griffith University in Australia under the guidance of Professor Belinda Beck. The programme involves supervised, progressive resistance, impact and balance training. Ongoing real world data collection from clients participating in the program demonstrates that Onero™ effectively increases bone density, improves balance and posture, and decreases the risk of falls. Trial results show that 86% of participants increased bone density in the lumbar spine, while 69% saw improvements at the hip. These results were presented at the 2018 annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research in Montreal.
To ensure safety and optimal outcomes, the programme is delivered under the supervision oftrained and licensed physiotherapists. At Prohealth Posture Plus we are proud to be the firstproviders of this programme in Asia. Since 2015, Onero™ has successfully improved bonehealth in individuals with osteoporosis and osteopenia across Australia and is now spreadingaround the world.
Why is supervised exercise essential?
Progressive bone loading exercises require close supervision by healthcare professionals with specialized training, to ensure proper technique to avoid injury in those with low bone density.
Key elements of Onero™ include:
How you lift: Your lifting technique ensures that load is effectively transferred to the areas that need it most.
How much you lift: The weight used needs to be sufficient to stimulate bone growth. Progression of load: Gradually increasing the load is crucial for safety and ongoing improvement.
What to expect during an Onero™ session:
Initially, you will undergo a comprehensive assessment covering your past medical history and ongoing specific risk factors for bone health. We then evaluate your balance, strength, and flexibility through various tests. These evaluations, combined with your bone scan (DEXA) results, determine your starting point and the pace of your progression within the programme. Each 40-minute session includes a variety of exercises, such as compound lifts, impact training, balance activities, and other exercises tailored to your needs.
How does Onero™ support bone health?
Bone growth is a slow process, requiring at least 6 months for new bone tissue to form, with imaging results reflecting changes even later. Onero™ benefits both men and women with low to very low bone mineral density, leading to notable improvements in bone density, muscle strength, balance, and a reduction in falls after 8 months of consistent training.
How frequently should I attend sessions?
The evidence from the LIFTMOR trials shows that training twice per week for 30 minutesover 8 months was sufficient to see an improvement in bone density. Bone formation and breakdown are ongoing processes, therefore it’s important to consistently load your bones to maintain their strength. After reaching peak bone mass around age 30, bone density naturally declines with age. The saying "use it or lose it" applies—regular loading helps preserve and improve bone health.
