Traditional Chinese Medicine - FAQ’s

General Information

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic medical system that has been practised for over 3,000 years. TCM views the body as an interconnected whole, focusing on restoring balance in the body’s Qi (vital energy), blood, yin, and yang. By addressing imbalances and blockages, TCM supports the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

  • Our TCM services address a wide range of health concerns, including:

    • Women’s Health: Menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and menopausal symptoms.

    • Fertility Support: Enhancing natural conception, improving reproductive wellness, and supporting IVF & IUI treatments.

    • Digestive Disorders: Support for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.

    • Pain management: Relief for headaches, migraines, neck and back pain, joint discomfort, muscle soreness, and chronic or acute pain conditions.

    • Emotional and Mental Health: Natural approaches to ease anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress, and emotional imbalance

    • Cancer care support: Alleviation of post-chemotherapy side effects such as fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, and hot flashes.

    • Skin and cosmetic concerns: Acne, eczema, puffiness, dull complexion, hair loss, sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles

    • Respiratory Issues: Asthma, allergies, sinusitis, common cold, and cough.

    • Other Conditions: Fatigue, poor circulation, immune system support, and neurological disorders.

TCM is also excellent for preventive care and maintaining overall wellness, helping to strengthen your body's natural healing abilities before illness occurs.

  • At Prohealth TCM, we offer a comprehensive range of TCM therapies, each tailored to your unique needs and health goals:

    • Acupuncture: Gentle, precise needle insertion at specific points to regulate the flow of Qi, restore balance, and activate the body’s natural healing response.

    • Herbal Medicine: Customized herbal formulas designed to match your constitution and current condition, supporting long-term health and vitality.

    • Cupping Therapy & Gua Sha: Through gentle scraping (Gua Sha) and suction therapy (Cupping), it can effectively promote circulation, relieve muscle tension and stiffness, reduce pain and inflammation, and support the body’s detoxification process.

    • Facial Acupuncture: Uses ultra‑fine needles (as thin as 0.1–0.12 mm, finer than a human hair) to gently stimulate precise points on the face, muscles, and fascia. This natural, non-invasive therapy promotes circulation, supports collagen production, lifts and tones facial muscles, and revitalises the complexion from within—restoring both inner balance and outer radiance.

  • Yes, all our practitioners are fully registered with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong (CMCHK). We maintain the highest professional standards and are committed to ongoing education to provide you with safe, effective, and evidence-based TCM treatments.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) differs from Western medicine in that it views the body as an interconnected system and focuses on restoring balance rather than only addressing isolated symptoms. TCM works to treat the underlying root of illness while also relieving discomfort. Therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and dietary guidance are natural, non-invasive methods that strengthen the body’s innate healing ability and promote long-term wellness. While Western medicine often relies on pharmaceuticals or surgery to manage disease, TCM offers a complementary, holistic path that emphasises prevention, balance, and individualised care.

Your First Visit

  • Your initial consultation is designed to be both informative and relaxing, helping us understand your unique needs while introducing you to TCM. Our consultation typically lasts 40-50 minutes, and here’s what you can expect:

Detailed Health History: We'll discuss your current symptoms, medical history, medications, lifestyle, diet, sleep patterns, and stress levels. This helps us understand your overall health picture.

TCM Diagnostic Assessment and Physical Examination: Your practitioner may check your pulse, tongue, and overall appearance to gain insight into your body’s internal balance and energy flow. Depending on your condition, we may examine affected areas and assess your posture, movement, and energy levels.

Personalised Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, or a combination of therapies.

First Treatment: In most cases, you’ll receive your first treatment during the initial visit, giving you a direct experience of how TCM can support your health.

Guidance & Next Steps: You’ll receive practical advice on diet, lifestyle, and self‑care to enhance your results. Together, we’ll outline the recommended course of care moving forward.

  • Be Open and Honest
The more you share about your health, lifestyle, and goals, the more accurately your practitioner can tailor your treatment. Be sure to mention any current diagnoses, medications, or supplements so we have a complete picture of your health.

    Eat Lightly Before Acupuncture
If you are coming for an acupuncture session, have a small, balanced meal or snack 1–2 hours beforehand. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach or overly full.

    Arrive Relaxed
Give yourself a few minutes to settle in, breathe, and shift into a calmer state before treatment begins. This helps your body ease into the session and maximizes the benefits.

  • No, a doctor's referral is not required to receive TCM treatment in Hong Kong. You can book an appointment directly with our clinic. We're happy to communicate with your other healthcare providers when appropriate and with your consent to ensure the best possible outcomes for your health.

Treatment and Cost’s

  • Acupuncture uses very fine needles, much thinner than those used for injections or blood tests. Most people feel little to no pain when the needles are inserted—sometimes just a mild tingling, warmth, or a gentle “dull” sensation that quickly fades. Many patients find treatments deeply relaxing and even fall asleep during the session.

  • The number of treatments depends on your individual condition, overall health, and wellness goals. Some people notice improvement after just one or two sessions, while others with more chronic conditions may benefit from a longer series of weekly treatments. Your practitioner will create a personalized plan and review your progress to make adjustments as needed.

In general, short-term issues (like a common cold) often require only a few days of medicine. For general internal medicine concerns, once a week is usually recommended. Acute pain conditions may benefit from more frequent sessions at the beginning. Menstrual or gynecological concerns are often addressed over the course of around three menstrual cycles for best results.

  • Most Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies, including acupuncture and herbal medicine, are safe and well‑tolerated when performed by a qualified practitioner. Mild side effects may include temporary soreness at needle sites, light bruising, or slight fatigue after a session—these usually pass quickly. Herbal medicine may occasionally cause digestive changes, which are monitored and adjusted. Serious side effects are very rare, and your comfort and safety are always the top priority.

After the Appointment

    • Rest if you can
Give your body space to integrate the treatment. Light activity is fine, but avoid overexertion right after your appointment. Stay hydrated, drink warm water or tea to support circulation and help flush out any toxins released.

    • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
These can interfere with your body’s natural balancing process after treatment.

    • Notice your body’s changes
You may feel relaxed, energized, or even a bit tired. Sometimes mild soreness or emotional release happens—these are normal and usually temporary.

    • Follow your practitioner’s advice
Each person’s needs are unique. Your practitioner may suggest herbal medicine or simple lifestyle adjustments to continue the healing process at home.

  • It depends on the type of medication and the specific herbal formula. Some herbs and pharmaceuticals can work well together, while others may interact.

Our practitioners will carefully review your current medication list before prescribing any herbs. Herbal formulas are customized and adjusted to ensure they support your Western treatment safely.

**Please never stop, change, or reduce your Western medication without first consulting your physician.
