Physiotherapy Abdominal Binding

Abdominal Binding

Physiotherapy Abdominal Binding: 10-Day Intensive Physiotherapy Programme

Our Clinical Abdominal Binding is a premier physiotherapy service that bridges the gap between traditional Chinese confinement wisdom and evidence-based practice. This intervention utilises a single, continuous piece of cotton cloth to provide structural support to the postnatal trunk. Unlike standard commercial bindings, this clinical technique allows your physiotherapist to apply graduated tension tailored to your unique anatomical recovery, ensuring maximum support while maintaining skin integrity. This treatment approach is combined with our physiotherapy and manual therapy treatments, as well as, post-natal rehabilitation.

Symptoms, Treatments and Approach

Why is the Abdominal Binding Important?

During pregnancy, the body produces Relaxin, a hormone that loosens muscles, pelvic joints, and ligaments to allow for fetal growth. This often results in:

Abdominal Instability: Stretching of the linea alba leading to Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRA).

Pelvic Widening: Increased pressure on the sacroiliac joints and lumbar spine, often causing chronic lower back pain.

Organ Displacement: The physical shifting of internal organs to accommodate the growing uterus.

Our 10 day extensive course combined with physiotherapy interventions provides the external stability needed to facilitate the return of internal organs to their pre-pregnancy positions and support the recovery of the abdominal wall and pelvic ligaments.

Who is it for?

This service is designed for postnatal patients managing:

Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Separation): Visible bulging or weakness in the abdominal midline.

Postnatal Postural Fatigue: Lower back pain and spinal pressure caused by weakened core support.

Pelvic Instability: Discomfort in the hips or pubic symphysis.

Visceral Support Needs: Patients seeking a combined clinical and tradition Chinese confinement approach.

Clinical Timing & Safety Guidelines

To ensure safe tissue remodeling, the program follows strict clinical timelines:

Vaginal Delivery: Commencing from 4 weeks postpartum

Cesarean Delivery: Commencing from 8 weeks postpartum, depending on individual surgical recovery.

Miscarriage Recovery: Commencing 1 to 2 weeks post-event to assist in physical and emotional healing.

Note: This treatment is contraindicated for patients with active skin infections, severe heart/lung conditions, Postpartum pelvic organ prolapse or those currently experiencing heavy lochia (postpartum bleeding).

  • Your first session is a 60-minute diagnostic evaluation where your physiotherapist will:

    • Quantitative Assessment: Measure the degree of abdominal separation (DRA) and assess pelvic stability.

    • Functional Screening: Evaluate core engagement and breathing patterns to ensure binding will not restrict respiratory function.

    • Clinical Binding: The first application of the single-cloth binder, worn for 6–8 hours to begin the stabilisation process.

  • Over the 10-day course, daily sessions are required to adapt to your body’s rapid changes:

    • Integrated Abdominal Fascia Release: Each session includes specialised manual therapy to improve bowel motility, reduce fluid retention ("belly wind"), and stimulate the lymphatic system.

    • Daily Re-calibration: As swelling decreases and uterine involution continues, the single-cloth binder is re-applied daily to maintain therapeutic tension.

    • Neuromuscular Re-education: You will receive guidance on gentle core activation exercises that complement the external support of the binder.

    • Progress Tracking: Comparison of measurements on Day 10 to establish a long-term recovery and exercise plan.
